        2. Upload a picture (your avatar) using the Account link at the top of the page
        3. Go to the Users link at the top of the page and add friends
      3. Cool things about xtivus
        1. There is no faster way of creating and sharing content on the web

        5. There are over 80 XTypes (and more coming) to facilitate content creation
        6. * NEW * Use the browser print functionality to print the Details tab content
      4. Recognized shortcomings
        1. You can't select multiple items for copying or cutting
        2. You can't create rich text content (fonts, colors, etc.)
        3. This is a beta site ("stuff" happens). Hang in there with me

      6. Terminology (e.g., what the heck is a set?)
        1. Set
          1. A set is a collection of lists of a certain type. For example, a Task List contains Tasks and only Tasks. A Task Set, then, contains Task Lists and only Task Lists. Set icons have a green background.
        2. List
          1. A list is a collection of items. A list can be typed or untyped. A typed list contains only items of certain types (usually just one type). For example, a Task List contains Tasks and only Tasks. An untyped list can contain items of any type. "xtivus User Information" is an untyped list. List icons have a blue background.
        3. Map
          1. A map (or maybe the more familiar term is "record") is a collection of key-value pairs. It may also contain lists. A map can be typed or untyped. A typed map contains a pre-defined and immutable set of keys and lists. An untyped map allows you to add, remove and rename keys and lists. Map icons have a yellow background.
        4. Value
          1. A value is a text entry contained by a list. Value icons appear as tiny blue squares.
          2. Sometimes they are single line (e.g., values in the untyped list). Sometimes they are multiline (e.g., Note List values).
        5. KeyValue
          1. A keyvalue is a key-value pair contained by a map. Keyvalue icons appear as tiny yellow squares.
          2. Sometimes they are single line (e.g., the Name in a Link map). Sometimes they are multiline (e.g., the Description in a File map).
      7. About the links at the top of the page
        1. xtivus
          1. The xtivus link takes you to the home page for xtivus. (It says "Get xSited!" right now.)
        2. Jump
          1. Jump will popup a set of links to your xSites, your friend's xSites and your group xSites.
          2. Close the popup without taking action by clicking outside the popup or by clicking the Cancel link next to the popup title.
        3. Friends
          1. Friends will popup a set of links that allow you to manage friend relationships.
          2. You can accept, decline and remove friends here (and on the Users page).
          3. Close the popup without taking action by clicking outside the popup or by clicking the Cancel link next to the popup title.
        4. Favorites
          1. Favorites will popup a set of links that allow you to manage your favorites xSites.
          2. How do you add a favorite? When you are on an xSite that you want to add to your favorites, click on the xtivus "x" icon at the root of the xSite. For example, on this page it is the icon to the left of "PUBLIC: Joel Pearson". Doing that will display a menu from which you can choose to "Add To Favorites". A popup then allows you to add tags to the xSite as you add it as a favorite. (Give it a try!)
          3. Close the popup without taking action by clicking outside the popup or by clicking the Cancel link next to the popup title.
        5. Groups
          1. empty
        6. Users
          1. The Users page allows you to see other Users and jump to their xSites.
          2. You can also use the page to add friends. (They need to accept before you can see each others FRIENDS xSites.)
          3. The "xSite" link at the top right of the page will bring you back to the xSite you last accessed.
        7. Account
          1. The Account page is used to manage information about your account.
          2. Change you name, email or password via this page.
          3. You can also upload a picture that will be used as your avatar throughout xtivus.
          4. The "xSite" link at the top right of the page will bring you back to the xSite you last accessed.
        8. Sign Out
          1. Click the Sign Out link to sign out of xtivus. Always be sure to do this on a public or shared computer.
      8. About the left navigation pane
        1. The plus and minus boxes
          1. The plus and minus boxes are used to open and close items in the hierarchy.
        2. The Root (or top item)
          1. The Root (or top item) identifies the xSite you are on. The name is not changeable.
          2. You can use the Root menu to add the xSite to your favorites list. Menu? That's coming up.
        3. The "XTypes" list (first item under the Root)
          1. The XTypes list contains definitions for all the XTypes available in xtivus. It contains the same information regardless of the xSite you are browsing. In general, you don't need to do anything with the XTypes item. In fact, at some point it will probably go away.
        4. The "Uploads" set (second item under the Root)
          1. The Uploads set is the default container for files you upload. If you upload files (via the dialog under the Upload tab) and the item selected in the left nav cannot receive uploads, the file will be uploaded into a list within the Uploads set. The list will have a name that corresponds to the date of the upload. Uploaded files can then be cut or copied to a different location within the xSite.
          2. You are only allowed to upload to xSites for which you have edit access.
        5. The icons and their menus (next to each item)
          1. The icons give you the type of the associated item (or will give you the type as you work more with xtivus).
          2. Clicking an icon selects the associated item and drops down a menu of actions you can perform on the item.
          3. Typical left nav menu actions include rename, edit, copy, cut, paste, collapse, expand and add to clipboard.
          4. Unless you want the menu to appear, click on the text next to the item to select it.
          5. The menu goes away if you move your cursor away from the menu.
          6. The blue bar separating the left nav from the right view is draggable. Use it to size the two panes.
        6. The text you see (i.e., the content)
          1. The text you see is the xSite content. In the left nav it is hierarchical and unformatted (there are no line breaks). Clicking on a text item selects it. If the Details tab is selected, a flattened and somewhat more formatted view of the item is displayed.
          2. If you have edit access to the xSite and the selected item is editable, clicking the text item again in the left nav will allow you to edit the item. To cancel out of the edit without changes being processed, simply press the Esc key. To save the changes, press the Tab key. In the case of a single line edit, you can also press the Enter key. (Pressing the Enter key in a multi-line edit simply adds a new line within the edit.) You may also save changes by mouse clicking outside of the edit box.
          3. Editing can also be initiated by selecting Rename or Edit from the icon menu corresponding to the text item.
          4. You are only allowed to edit text on xSites for which you have edit access.
        7. The text that is underlined
          1. Text that is underlined is a link (just like any other web site). What happens when you click on the link will depend on the link itself. If it is a link to a web page, the web page will appear in a new tab or window (depending on your browser preferences).
          2. If it is a link to an uploaded image file, the image will be displayed in a new tab or window.
          3. Other types of uploaded files will result in your browser prompting you with a download dialog.
          4. There are also special links that will take you to specific items within the current xSite or within another xSite to which you have access. In these cases, a new tab or window is not opened. Try it! Click on the "Italy 2008 (FRIENDS: Joel Pearson)" link in the left nav.
          5. To select the item without clicking on the link, click to the right of the underlined text.
        8. To copy/cut and paste
          1. If you have edit access to the xSite, you will see Copy and Cut as options in the icon menu. Clicking Copy or Cut will initiate the copy/cut and paste process. The item will be highlighted in gray for copy and in yellow for cut.
          2. Next, choose another item in the xSite that will be the target item for the paste. The rules around this are kind of complicated. If the target item can hold items of the type being copy/cut, the target item's icon menu will contain options for Paste In As First and Paste In As Last. Otherwise it won't. Similarly, if the target item's container (i.e., the item one level up) can hold items of the type being copy/cut, the target item's icon menu will contain options for Paste Above and Paste Below. Otherwise it won't.
          3. Selecting one of the paste options from an icon menu will complete the operation. It cannot be undone. A copy makes a copy (duh!). A cut actually moves the item to the new location. In either case, the container into which the item was pasted is selected.
          4. To cancel the copy/cut and paste operation, simply click in the left nav in some open whitespace.
          5. You are only allowed to copy/cut and paste on xSites for which you have edit access.
        9. To delete an item
          1. If you have edit access to the xSite, you will see Delete as an option in the icon menu. Clicking Delete will initiate the delete process. The item will be highlighted in yellow. A confirmation window will ask if you really want to delete the highlighted object.
          2. THERE IS NO UNDO RIGHT NOW. This is permanent. Let's be careful out there! To be safe, create an untyped list into which you cut and paste things until you are sure you no longer need them.
          3. You are only allowed to delete on xSites for which you have edit access.
      9. About the Details tab (right view pane)
        1. Navigating an xSite via the Details tab
          1. When the Details tab is selected in the right view, the contents of the item selected in the left nav will be displayed beneath the tabs in the right view. If the selected item is a list or a map, its name will be displayed in bold text.
          2. To the left of the bold text is a blue arrow pointing up (unless you are at the root). If you click this arrow, you move the selection in the left nav to the parent of the current selection. This will, in turn, cause the right view to display the newly selected item's contents.
          3. If the selected item in the left nav is a list or a map, an icon will display in the right view to the left of each contained item in the right view. The appearance of the icon will vary based on the type of the corresponding item. Regardless of type, clicking the icon will move the selection in the left nav to that item. This will, in turn, cause the right view pane to display the newly selected item's contents.
        2. Editing an xSite via the Details tab
          1. You must have edit access to an xSite in order to add, edit, move or delete items via the Details tab.
          2. Click on the item with which you want to work in the Details tab. This will highlight the entire row. It will also show applicable menu options. They may include Edit, Delete, Add Above, Add Below and the Move options: Top, Up, Dn and Bot.
        3. Deleting items via the Details tab
        4. Adding items via the Details tab
        5. Moving items via the Details tab
      10. About the Upload tab (right view pane)
        1. Uploading files via the Upload tab
          1. The Upload tab will only be visible if you have edit access to an xSite.
          2. You can upload up to five files at a time. The total size of files uploaded must be less than 10 MB.
          3. When uploading you can optionally specify Title, Description and Tags for the files. Each uploaded file will be contained by a map of type "File". Title, Description and Tags are keys within the File map. Title will end up being the name of the map. If you don't set it here, it will be set from the original uploaded file name. You can always set these values later rather setting them on upload.
          4. Digital camera picture files are generally very large. They capture very fine details that allow for the production of large prints or even posters. You can upload those files as they are if you need that detail on your xSite for some reason. Or you can reduce the file size at upload time by specifying the maximum pixels in the width and/or height. Remember that smaller images load faster.
          5. Where your uploaded files end up depends on the item selected in the left nav. If the item selected can contain maps of type "File" (or its parent can), the uploaded files will end up there. Otherwise, the uploaded files will be sent to a File List within the "Uploads" File Set. The File List will be named "yymm-mm-dd" where yymm-mm-dd is the current date.
        2. Troubleshooting upload errors
          1. Make sure the total size of the files you are uploading is under 10 MB.
          2. Make sure you are still logged into xtivus. (This is caught right away within most browsers.)
        3. What's with the screwy names?
          1. The actual name under which the file is stored on the server is a long random series of characters. It protects the file from being downloaded by someone operating outside of xtivus authorizations. You can lookup "GUID" in wikipedia for more information.
      11. About the Log tab (right view pane)
        1. As a user of xtivus should I care about this?
          1. Not really. The log simply shows update transactions that are being sent to the server.
      12. About the XML tab (right view pane)
        1. As a user of xtivus should I care about this?
          1. Not really. In fact, the XML tab will always be empty at this point. In the future, it will show an XML representation of the object that is the current selection in the left nav. This could eventually facilitate other types of processing in xtivus.
