## BPALL and Volunteers Honored
Our league was recognized, during the Little League District 27 banquet on September 10th, for several achievements: Gwenn Mascioli as BPALL's Mom of The Year; Ramesh Raghupathi as BPALL's Volunteer of The Year; BPALL itself for hosting more tournament games in 2010 than any other league; Don Martin for his excellent work in hosting games; and Dave Phelan as the District's Volunteer of The Year. All of our volunteers do a lot with BPALL, but it was great to have the above individuals recognized for their efforts on behalf of the players. Dave's recognition by the District for all of his work in scheduling and rescheduling District level games (including Fall Ball) is very well deserved. He puts a lot of time in behind the scenes for the District, and it was nice to see those efforts lauded. Congratulations to all of the BPALL honorees!
## Francisville A's - CHAMPIONS!

The Francisville A's, a team supported by BPALL, wound up their season as champions of the Heritage Baseball League. In the spring, BPALL coordinated a charity drive with [***Penn Liberty Bank***] [2] in which equipment donated by families and BPALL supporters went to startup inner city Philadelphia Little League team, the [**Francisville A's and Camp HOPE for Kids**] [1].

##BPALL Softball Team Wins District 27 Title
The 11/12 International Softball Tournament Team defeated Exton 5-2 in the district finals. The team went 4-0 in the Tournament, outscoring its opponents by a combined 33-6. Sectional play starts on Tuesday, July 13. The team is managed by Andy Youman and coached by Scott Mascioli, Kerry Kostenbauder, and Chuck Rueger. Congratulations!

## Cardinals Win Majors Championship
The Pamela Schwartz Prudential Fox & Roach Cardinals beat the QuarryCut Athletics, 8-5, to take the 2010 Phelan Cup, awarded annually to the Berwyn Paoli Majors Boys Champions. The Cardinals are managed by Joel Schwartz and coached by David Williams, John Roeder, and Scott Satell.

## Think Spring
It may not look like it, but warm weather is on the way and the 2010 spring season is right around the corner. Once again, we have had terrific registration turn out for our baseball, softball, teeball and challenger programs. Here are some things to think about as the season approaches.
## Pitch In - Field Of Dreams Work Days
When the snow clears, we will begin the yearly ritual of getting our fields in shape to play. This means moving dirt, raking and grooming the fields, setting up the snack bars, installing the bases and all of the other things that need to be done to get our Field of Dreams ready for the season. It is always a fun time when friends and neighbors pitch in together down at the fields in anticipation of the start of a new spring season. Weather and field conditions permitting, work days are scheduled for **Sunday, March 7** and **Sunday, March 14** from 9:00 a.m. until the work is done.
## Looking For Student Umpires
Under the guidance of Trudy and Chritopher DiNardo, our student umpire program has been a great success, providing training for student umpires to go out and umpire games in our minors baseball and softball divisions and allowing kids aged 13 and up the opportunity to earn a little extra money.
For all those Student Umpires who did not did not attend the February 27th Student Umpire Clinic, there are two remaining Umpire Clinics that you may attend. Remember, in order to be a Student Umpire, each Student Umpire must attend one Umpire Clinic each year. If you do not attend one of these clinics, other Student Umpires, who have taken an Umpire Clinic, will be scheduled before you.
The dates of the two Umpire Clinics are March 20 (***new date***) and March 27. [See full Calendar for more information] [1].

## Picture Day at Field of Dreams - Sunday 4/25
Bring your family for an afternoon of food and fun - kids will love the rock wall and moon bounce!

Your coach should provide an order form before Picture Day; complete this form, enclose payment, and bring it with you on the 25th. Your cooperation in this advance preparation will help to keep the picture taking process on schedule. Order forms will also be available during Picture Day.

## Picture Day Moves to TEMS
Due to rain in the forecast for Sunday, April 25th, Picture Day will move indoors to T/E Middle School. [***Picture Day Schedule***] [1] remains the same.
Enter TEMS through the front doors, as the photographers will be set up in the gym. As a result of the change in location, the moon bounce, rock wall, and grilling will be cancelled. We hope to reschedule the Troop Collection for another day.
We will be selling *new* BPALL moisture-wicking t-shirts, bat bags, commemorative bricks, and Gala tickets at TEMS on Sunday afternoon.

## Berwyn Paoli Area Little League: Field of Dreams
### *"If you build it, they will come"*
#### 1980s
In the early 1980's, it was clear that the population in our area was growing, and there was an increasing field shortage for the Berwyn Paoli Area LL.
Don Baker initially contacted and negotiated with the Philadelphia Electric Co (PECO) for a tract of land off of Howellville Road in Berwyn. By 1988, then President John Marshall and Tom Toscani completed the lease for the site now known as the "Field of Dreams". Over the next three years plans and estimates were drawn and redrawn and small fundraisers were held to raise money for the project.
The original budget proposals for the field complex ranged from between $650,000 and $800,000.
#### 1992
In the Fall of 1992, the Berwyn Paoli Area LL Board of Directors voted to construct two new fields off of the Howellville Road property owned by PECO. The League's treasury had less than $7,500. Meetings with the Chester County Historical Society, PECO, Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, Tredyffrin Township and others took place over a period of several months. On November 6, 1992 the Official Groundbreaking for the Berwyn-Paoli Area Little League's ("BPALL") Field of Dreams ("Dreams") took place when approximately 20 volunteers began to remove trash, trees, shrubs on the area where Toscani Field now exists.
With hard work, good intentions and some luck, parents and players began the clean up of what was a local dump and level the top area of Dreams. On December 7th, a bad storm caused a "landslide" of mud to flood the Reform Church on Howellville Road. Seven volunteers spent 7 hours clearing and cleaning the Church basement and parking lot of sludge. This is not the only time this will happen ...
In November and December alone, "Rocky" our excavation contractor, used up all our funds, but agreed to continue work on the fields due to the support he was receiving from the parents and volunteers each weekend and our promise to raise more money.
To help gain the maximum result from our funds and our volunteers, Marty and Michael Cappelletti established volunteer teams which were headed by Peter Hopkins, Jim Haas, Jeanne Roggio, John Waldyer, Art DeSolis, Al D'Antonio, Ray Watson, Dennis Wasilewski, and Woody Steele to work on the fields. About this time, Caroline Haas, as Fundraising Chairperson, started her first of many fundraising campaigns; the "Field of Dreams" sweatshirt sales. This first campaign substantially raised the level of interest and participation in the project.
From November of 1992 through September of 1995 over $170,000 was raised through sweatshirt sales, sign advertisements, Silent Auctions, Monte Carlo evenings, door to door campaigns, corporate and individual donations, and the concession stand.
#### 1993
In February 1993, Caroline Haas' Annual Gala Committee: Mary Louise MacMullan, Anne Toscani, and Ed Antoian, hosted our first Silent Auction at Waynesborough CC which was a great success and raised over $21,000. Despite the harsh winter we are on our way!! With these funds and money received from the Sign Advertisements, and Corporate and individual contributions, we were able to complete the design of Phase I, pay for the leveling of the first three fields, install fences, sod two of the fields while seeding all three.
Under the direction of the Cappelletti crew, players and parents work through the Spring, and finally, fences are installed on Fields 1 & 2 (later named Toscani & Cappelletti) in late May. The upper parking lot and entry road is completed. On June 6th, while the temperature hits 100 degrees, sod is laid on the infields of Fields 1 & 2, and the outfield is seeded. The water hookup has not occurred, but the Reform Church allows us to connect 400 feet of hose to their faucet. That night someone stays at Dreams moving a small sprinkler from spot to spot on the fields. The Paoli Fire Deptartment drops 700 gallons of water on each field, Saturday & Sunday, June 6th & 7th.
On June 30th, 1993 the first game is played at Dreams between the Challenger teams from Berwyn Paoli and Devon Strafford LL (Jeannie Roggio and Toni Budd established the BPALL Challenger League for physically and mentally disadvantaged youth in 1991. They also helped establish four other local Challenger programs. Jeanne became Director of the District 23 Challenger Division.), at which the Phillie Phanatic throws out the first ball. Approximately 350 people attend, and the evening is a great success.
That Fall both fields are overseeded and the TeeBall Field is sodded. On November 1, a "Buck for a Bucket of Rocks" is held.
#### 1994
During the early Spring the Cappelletti scoreboard is installed (scoreboard donated by Coke) along with the batting cage. Both upper parking lots are completed. Twelve fir trees are planted along Howellville Road. That Summer electric is installed and the construction of the Concession Stand begins. Work on the third field begins. The Public Address system is completed at the first field. The handicap ramp system is built. On April 23, 1994 the softball and baseball fields were officially dedicated and named "Toscani Field" and "Cappelletti Field", respectively, due to the work these families contributed to the Field of Dreams project. This same day, softball, baseball and teeball games are held for the first time simultaneously. These fields have been in constant use ever since. Later that Spring, the first Tournament games are hosted at Field of Dreams.
Also completed by June were the construction of stormwater drainage trenches and outlets, piping of an underground irrigation system for all three fields (approximately 600 ft), and construction of two retention ponds.
The Concession Stand was completed and a food handling license received. The Concession Stand and roads were constructed through the efforts of Marty and Michael Cappelletti, Mike DePaul, Richard Wattles, Ray Watson, Art DeSolis, Brent Dougher, Peter Hopkins, Al DiAntonio, and Ken Daniels ... all within three weeks! The Stand became operational through the efforts of Tom Havrilla.
That Fall the three fields (Cappelletti, Toscani, and teeball) were aerated and reseeded. Mike Romano and Rob Pezotti have directed the landscaping volunteers and Mike still cuts the grass at the complex.
Board members met with the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the wetland areas. The Board votes to build out "Phase II" of the Field of Dreams complex, which will eventually become two more coach pitch fields, and one more 60' diamond.
#### 1995
In the Spring the entrance to Field of Dreams was paved. For the third time the water feed had to be re-done. The retaining tank and water lines were installed at the Concession Stand. Beginning this year Kathy Siravo, Janet Wham, and Marcia Weller organized the concession stand management. Rob Pezotti planted a dozen pine trees along Howellville Road and thirteen Japanese maple trees were planted next to the main road into the complex.
Professional planning assistance by Dave Fiorello, Barry Walsh, and Phil Hooper in developing the survey plans and engineering reports allowed the League to submit the results to Tredyffrin Township by June 15 for Phase II. Once approved this allowed for the construction of the two coach pitch fields to proceed.
That Fall, the grading plans were prepared for the Phase II fields. Tons of fill were delivered in preparation for the beginning of the construction of the fields West of the wetlands. The underground sprinkler system was pressurized on the Phase I fields. Plans were drawn up for the Storage/Announcers Building at Cappelletti Field. Groundbreaking for the playground area and additional landscaping near the First Refuge Church occurred.
#### 1996
During the Spring and Summer the Phase II fields were graded and laid out. The Reform Church's parking lot was repaved. A permit was received for the Cappelletti storage/press box building. The flower bed along the outside of the Concession Stand was planted. The water main was corrected for the last time.
In the Fall, Tom Toscani established the High School Community Service Program. The first major project using the high school kids was seeding and laying sod for the three new fields. The sprinkler system was extended to all three new fields.
#### 1997
This year the Phase II fields were overseeded, and plans were prepared for the Township for the final Phase II layout. The infields were cut out. The fence specifications were prepared and installed for the three fields. The Cappelletti press box was constructed and three sets of bleachers and benches were purchased. An underground drainage system was constructed on Cappelletti Field. The first official game took place June 7th at Haas Field.
That Fall, the "Walk of Dreams" was begun. The league obtained a permit from the Township to use the new fields. Approximately half of the parking lot was leveled and stoned across from Haas Field. In association with the Reform Church, landscaped around the Church. The sprinkler system piping to the Phase II Fields was installed but not connected. Aerated and overseeded all six fields. Began to clear out the Phase III section of weeds and trash.
#### 1998
Began the season with all six fields ready for use. Constructed three new handicap ramps, paved the road and put up traffic signs. Water was connected to the Phase II section. On May 30th, Berwyn Paoli hosted the District 21, 27 and 28 Challenger Day program. Over 120 High School students participated helping 239 players. On June 30th, a 5 Year Anniversary Party was held at the complex celebrating that first Challenger game.
In the Fall completed the leveling of the Phase III field through the efforts of Jim Silvius and Ed Antoian. Extended the driveway and parking lots down to the senior field. The sprinkler system was completed on the Phase II fields. That September, the first Mom's Tournament and BPALL Picnic was held.
#### 1999
That Spring and Summer, continued the "Walk of Dreams" construction. The final stoning of all parking areas was completed. Installed two drainage basins. Reseeded all of the Phase II and III fields. Hosted Challenger Day on May 22nd with 269 players and over 150 high school students participating. The outline of the 90 foot diamond was completed. League President Tom Toscani signed contracts with Coca-Cola for scorebaards at all 60 and 90 foot diamonds. The sprinkler system piping was installed at the 90 foot diamond.
In the Fall, in conjunction with TEYSA, the large storage buildings were purchased and installed. One of the storage buildings was for the sole use of the soccer organization. The 90 foot diamond infield was cut out. Due to the drought that summer, most time went into repairing damage done on the Phase II fields.
#### 2000
In early Spring, the electric for the scoreboard and fencing for the 90 foot diamond was completed. Later that Spring the scoreboard was installed and batting cage erected.
#### 2005
The "lean-to" benches for the players were replaced with dugouts on Toscani, Cappelletti, and Haas fields. The softball diamond, Toscani Field, was skinned and new fencing added to make it suitable for both Little League and ASA tournament play.
#### 2007
Even with strict Little League regulation of bats for safety and consistency, technology became more and more impossible to ignore. As a result, we moved the fences back on the 90 foot diamond to maintain the quality of play for Senior League, American Legion, and other high-school-age leagues. The old Coach Pitch Field #6 was skinned and received a new batting cage and fencing.
#### 2008
This year, we will move the fences back on Cappelletti Field, including a padded wall and 12 foot fence in right field. We will replace the scoreboard and add a second concession stand to serve the upper fields. Another practice batting cage will be added between Cappelletti Field and Toscani Field.

About Markdown - 2010-04-27
## What is Markdown?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language that allows you to focus on creating written content for the web without worrying too much about HTML syntax. The content you create is later submitted to a Markdown engine (such as the one embedded in xtivus) to yield valid HTML.
## Origins
Markdown was created by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz. You can read more about Markdown:

Markdown Cheatsheet - 2010-04-27
## Introduction
This is intended to be a quick reference to Markdown syntax that will be most common within bpall.org. It is not a complete reference. It will provide some syntax shortcuts without identifying them as such. It will also leave out alternatives when the syntax provided will do nicely. If you want to understand the complete syntax, please refer to John Gruber's [Markdown Syntax Documentation] [1].

## Headings
A heading is created by typing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 # (hash or pound) signs followed by a space and then the heading text. One # sign creates a large heading. Six # signs (i.e., ######) creates a very small heading. In bpall.org, heading 1 is reserved for the page heading. In content, it will be more common for you to use headings 2, 3 and 4.
## Paragraphs
A paragraph is created by surrounding text, above and below, with a blank line. The content in bpall.org will have lots of these.
## Emphasis
Emphasis (usually *italics* or **bold** or ***both***) is created by surrounding the word or words with \* or \*\* or \*\*\*. Note that the asterisk(s) must touch the words they surround; no spaces.
The word \*\*emphasis\*\* here will get the second level of, well, emphasis when the content is rendered as HTML.
## Blockquotes
A blockquote (a block of indented text typically used for quotations) is created by starting the first line of a paragraph with `>` (the greater than sign). It's not certain this will be used much in bpall.org.
## Horizontal Rule
A horizontal rule is created by typing three asterisks (i.e., \*\*\*) on a line by themselves.
## Ordered Lists (Number Lists)
An ordered list is created by placing a number followed by a period at the beginning of each line within the list. The first entry should be `1.`. After that it doesn't matter as long as it is a number. Like a paragraph, there must be a blank line above and below the list. The following will be an ordered list when rendered as HTML:

And here it is rendered:

## Unordered Lists (Bullet Lists)
An unordered list is created by placing a dash (minus sign) at the beginning of each line within the list. Like a paragraph, there must be a blank line above and below the list. The following will be an unordered list when rendered as HTML:

## Links
A link is created in two steps. The first step is to insert the link text and a reference id at the position desired within your content. The second step is to add the remainder of the link information at the bottom of the Markdown entry. Here's an example:

> ... (more content until we reach the bottom of this entry) ...

In the first step, I typed the link text enclosed by square brackets, a space and then the reference id (a unique number also enclosed by square brackets).
In the second step, I typed the reference id followed by a colon, a space, the link url, another space and the link title (the text that pops up when you hover over the link). Note that the title is enclosed by quotes.

## Automatic Links
An automatic link is created in a one step process. Simply surround a url or email address with `<` and `>` (angle brackets). Note that this is less friendly than the link I created above. It lacks the link text and title but it has its place within bpall.org.

Here it is for real:

## Images
Like a normal link, an image is created in two steps. The first step is to insert the image alt text and a reference id at the position desired within your content. The second step is to add the remainder of the image information at the bottom of Markdown entry. Here's an example:
> This is my content and I want to display our website logo.
> \!\[BPALL Logo\] \[1\]
> ... (more content until we reach the bottom of this entry) ...
> \[1\]: http://www.bpall.org/images/BP50logoFinal_color75h.png "Berwyn Paoli Area Little League!"
In the first step, I typed the image alt text enclosed by square brackets, a space and then the reference id (a unique number also enclosed by square brackets). It's just like the first step in the link process. *Or is it?* **Look at the start of the entry.** There is an exclamation point right before the first square bracket. You need that exclamation point for the image to appear.
In the second step, I typed the reference id followed by a colon, a space, the image url, another space and the image title (the text that pops up when you hover over the image). Note that the title is enclosed by quotes.

## Backslash Escapes
You may find yourself needing to use a Markdown special character (e.g., #) as just that character without its Markdown specialness. In most cases you can place a backslash in front of it and everything will be fine. So, it's \\\*NEW\\\* to see real asterisks. Not \*NEW\*.
## Limitations
There is a current limitation in xtivus that prevents you from taking advantage of the complete Markdown syntax. Text created in xtivus is currently "scrubbed" of extra whitespace (spaces, tabs and the like). This was done so that plain text content would resemble in xtivus how it would eventually appear in a web page. Unfortunately, Markdown relies on that extra whitespace in certain instances.
For example, to create a code block using Markdown, you need to begin lines with at least four spaces. They get wiped away by xtivus. The same is true for Markdown/xtivus and multi-level/multi-paragraph lists. While inconvenient, you probably wouldn't be using these features in bpall.org anyway.
The one place where this does have an impact is the Markdown syntax for a new line within the same paragraph. This is accomplished in Markdown by ending a line with two spaces and then hitting Enter to begin a new line. The extra spaces are deleted by xtivus. The workaround is not too bad. Simply end the line with `<br />` (the actual HTML) instead of the two spaces.
Eventually, xtivus will be updated to allow for extra whitespace in Markdown content.
Markdown Sandbox - 2010-04-27
## Sandbox Usage Guidelines
This sandbox was created to demonstrate common Markdown syntax. It can also be used to test your content changes before taking them ***live***. While the "View" link within the detail tab of xtivus is handy for seeing your Markdown content as rendered in HTML, it cannot show you exactly what your content will look like within bpall.org. Why? Because the "View" link yields unstyled HTML whereas bpall.org is highly styled.
You can experiment using the sandbox. Simply add new entries under the Markdown Sandbox list. Click the "View" link in the xtivus detail tab for a quick look or click the Markdown Sandbox link (under Markdown Links) in the xtivus left nav to see the results in bpall.org.
If you are replacing a large amount of content in bpall.org consider taking the following steps:
1. create a new Markdown List under Website Markdown, ***or***
2. copy an existing Markdown List and paste it under Website Markdown
3. name the new or copied Markdown List to be Markdown Sandbox`-your name`
4. ensure that your Markdown Sandbox appears above the original in Website Markdown
5. ideally, it should also appear above the Markdown List (e.g., Home) you will be replacing
6. when you are ready to see your changes in bpall.org, remove `-your name` from the list name
7. you will then see your content when you go to <http://www.bpall.org/markdownsandbox.aspx>
8. when you are finished with changes, rename the list to replace the old content (e.g., Home)
That's all there is to using the Markdown Sandbox! The remainder of this document shows typical usage of Markdown within bpall.org.

Instead of typing my_techie_name you need to "escape" the underscores to get the intended: my\_techie\_name.

There are now recycling containers on site. Be sure to separate trash from recycle-ables as the presence of any trash in the recycling bins results in the contents being designated as trash and a fine charged to BPALL.
EligibilityOpen to all boys league age 7 (age as of April 30).
DescriptionTransitional league between Teeball and Minors Division. Coaches pitch to their own players (underhand or overhand). Intent is for the batters to put ball in play. No walks. Batter either strikes out or hits ball. A softer ball (not as soft as what is used in Teeball). Games are 4 innings long.
EligibilityOpen to all boys league age 8 (age as of April 30).
DescriptionTransitional league from Teeball to Minors. Coaches pitch overhand to their own team using a hard ball. Games are 5 innings long. Intent is for batters to put ball in play. No walks. Batter either strikes out or hits ball.
EligibilityAll boys league age 9 and boys league age 10 and 11 (age as of April 30) not drafted into majors.
DescriptionPlayers aged 9, 10 and 11. First year of kid pitch. Teams formed through a draft. Player placement requests are NOT honored beginning with this age group.
EligibilityAll boys league age 12 and boys league age 10 and 11 (age as of April 30) drafted into majors.
DescriptionPlayers age 10, 11 and 12 are eligible. Teams formed through a draft. 10 and 11 year olds not drafted into majors are put into Minors draft.

Coach Pitch
EligibilityOpen to all girls in grades 1 and 2 who are league age 8 or younger.
DescriptionThe objective is to have every girl hit and field the ball. Coaches pitch underhand to players on their team. Because this is a developmental league, more than three strikes are permitted to allow girls to put the ball into play.
EligibilityOpen to all girls in grades 3 and 4 who are league age 9 or older.
DescriptionEmphasis is on continued development of fielding and hitting skills and kid pitch is introduced. Players pitch to the opposing team, but walks are limited and modified rules allow for the coach to pitch to speed play. Scheduling includes teams from Devon Strafford.
EligibilityOpen to all girls in grades 5 and 6 and any 7th grader who is a league age 12.
DescriptionKid pitch with unlimited walks. Games are moderately competitive. Scheduling includes teams from Devon Strafford. Seventh graders who are league age 12 may elect to move up to the Juniors division, but become ineligible for the 12 year-old tournament team if they choose to do so.
EligibilityOpen to all girls league age 13 and 14. *

EligibilityOpen to all boys and girls who will be either 5 or 6 years old by April 30.
DescriptionTee ball is the entry into organized baseball. It is open to both boys and girls ages 5 and 6. The emphasis at this age is for the kids to have fun. It is geared toward helping establish the traditional Little League values of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play.
The season usually begins the Saturday after Easter weekend and continues until school lets out in mid June. There are no weekday games. Practices, if held, are solely at the discretion of the coach.
Scores of the games are not kept. Games are 4 innings long with an eight run limit for each team.

DescriptionThe Challenger Division is a program for mentally and physically disabled youth to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. It should be noted that where possible and with reasonable accommodations, we encourage disabled youngsters to participate in unrestricted league play provided their participation is possible and fair within the standard rules and regulations of Little League Baseball.
The goal of the Division is to allow the players to enjoy athletic and social activity strengthening their self-esteem and providing them the opportunity to develop a sense of teamwork and fair play, which are the hallmarks of the Little League program.
Some of the rules that apply to Little League Baseball have been adjusted to accommodate the Challenger Division.

Our Work Day to get the fields open and ready for play will be Sunday, March 13 starting at 9am. We had hoped to try for this Sunday, but the fields are still simply too soft. ##Changes to Majors Softball
There will be an exciting change in the Softball Majors division this year, as we merge our Majors softball program with Devon Strafford's Majors program. The groundwork for the change was laid last year when we merged schedules with DS during the season and merged tournament teams, resulting in an impressive run to the semi-finals in the district tournament. The synergy created by merging the teams at this level should make for a very exciting and competitive season, as well as tournament season.
All Softball Majors players will be required to attend an assessment session on Saturday, February 20th at Grand Slam in Malvern. Because of the merger with DS, coaches on both sides need time to evaluate the players prior to the draft, which will take place later that following week. This will allow us to set the Majors teams by the end of February.

Little League International has changed the age cutoffs for the various divisions in Teeball and Baseball (softball remains the same). Starting in 2015, players become age eligible for a particular division on January 1, i.e., if your son or daughter will turn 9 in the year 2015 even if they do so in November, they can play Baseball in the 9-year-old division in the Spring. ## Berwyn Paoli Area Little League: Field of Dreams
### *"If you build it, they will come"*
#### 1980s
In the early 1980's, it was clear that the population in our area was growing, and there was an increasing field shortage for the Berwyn Paoli Area LL.
Don Baker initially contacted and negotiated with the Philadelphia Electric Co (PECO) for a tract of land off of Howellville Road in Berwyn. By 1988, then President John Marshall and Tom Toscani completed the lease for the site now known as the "Field of Dreams". Over the next three years plans and estimates were drawn and redrawn and small fundraisers were held to raise money for the project.
The original budget proposals for the field complex ranged from between $650,000 and $800,000.
#### 1992
In the Fall of 1992, the Berwyn Paoli Area LL Board of Directors voted to construct two new fields off of the Howellville Road property owned by PECO. The League's treasury had less than $7,500. Meetings with the Chester County Historical Society, PECO, Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, Tredyffrin Township and others took place over a period of several months. On November 6, 1992 the Official Groundbreaking for the Berwyn-Paoli Area Little League's ("BPALL") Field of Dreams ("Dreams") took place when approximately 20 volunteers began to remove trash, trees, shrubs on the area where Toscani Field now exists.
With hard work, good intentions and some luck, parents and players began the clean up of what was a local dump and level the top area of Dreams. On December 7th, a bad storm caused a "landslide" of mud to flood the Reform Church on Howellville Road. Seven volunteers spent 7 hours clearing and cleaning the Church basement and parking lot of sludge. This is not the only time this will happen ...
In November and December alone, "Rocky" our excavation contractor, used up all our funds, but agreed to continue work on the fields due to the support he was receiving from the parents and volunteers each weekend and our promise to raise more money.
To help gain the maximum result from our funds and our volunteers, Marty and Michael Cappelletti established volunteer teams which were headed by Peter Hopkins, Jim Haas, Jeanne Roggio, John Waldyer, Art DeSolis, Al D'Antonio, Ray Watson, Dennis Wasilewski, and Woody Steele to work on the fields. About this time, Caroline Haas, as Fundraising Chairperson, started her first of many fundraising campaigns; the "Field of Dreams" sweatshirt sales. This first campaign substantially raised the level of interest and participation in the project.
From November of 1992 through September of 1995 over $170,000 was raised through sweatshirt sales, sign advertisements, Silent Auctions, Monte Carlo evenings, door to door campaigns, corporate and individual donations, and the concession stand.
#### 1993
In February 1993, Caroline Haas' Annual Gala Committee: Mary Louise MacMullan, Anne Toscani, and Ed Antoian, hosted our first Silent Auction at Waynesborough CC which was a great success and raised over $21,000. Despite the harsh winter we are on our way!! With these funds and money received from the Sign Advertisements, and Corporate and individual contributions, we were able to complete the design of Phase I, pay for the leveling of the first three fields, install fences, sod two of the fields while seeding all three.
Under the direction of the Cappelletti crew, players and parents work through the Spring, and finally, fences are installed on Fields 1 & 2 (later named Toscani & Cappelletti) in late May. The upper parking lot and entry road is completed. On June 6th, while the temperature hits 100 degrees, sod is laid on the infields of Fields 1 & 2, and the outfield is seeded. The water hookup has not occurred, but the Reform Church allows us to connect 400 feet of hose to their faucet. That night someone stays at Dreams moving a small sprinkler from spot to spot on the fields. The Paoli Fire Deptartment drops 700 gallons of water on each field, Saturday & Sunday, June 6th & 7th.
On June 30th, 1993 the first game is played at Dreams between the Challenger teams from Berwyn Paoli and Devon Strafford LL (Jeannie Roggio and Toni Budd established the BPALL Challenger League for physically and mentally disadvantaged youth in 1991. They also helped establish four other local Challenger programs. Jeanne became Director of the District 23 Challenger Division.), at which the Phillie Phanatic throws out the first ball. Approximately 350 people attend, and the evening is a great success.
That Fall both fields are overseeded and the TeeBall Field is sodded. On November 1, a "Buck for a Bucket of Rocks" is held.
#### 1994
During the early Spring the Cappelletti scoreboard is installed (scoreboard donated by Coke) along with the batting cage. Both upper parking lots are completed. Twelve fir trees are planted along Howellville Road. That Summer electric is installed and the construction of the Concession Stand begins. Work on the third field begins. The Public Address system is completed at the first field. The handicap ramp system is built. On April 23, 1994 the softball and baseball fields were officially dedicated and named "Toscani Field" and "Cappelletti Field", respectively, due to the work these families contributed to the Field of Dreams project. This same day, softball, baseball and teeball games are held for the first time simultaneously. These fields have been in constant use ever since. Later that Spring, the first Tournament games are hosted at Field of Dreams.
Also completed by June were the construction of stormwater drainage trenches and outlets, piping of an underground irrigation system for all three fields (approximately 600 ft), and construction of two retention ponds.
The Concession Stand was completed and a food handling license received. The Concession Stand and roads were constructed through the efforts of Marty and Michael Cappelletti, Mike DePaul, Richard Wattles, Ray Watson, Art DeSolis, Brent Dougher, Peter Hopkins, Al DiAntonio, and Ken Daniels ... all within three weeks! The Stand became operational through the efforts of Tom Havrilla.
That Fall the three fields (Cappelletti, Toscani, and teeball) were aerated and reseeded. Mike Romano and Rob Pezotti have directed the landscaping volunteers and Mike still cuts the grass at the complex.
Board members met with the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the wetland areas. The Board votes to build out "Phase II" of the Field of Dreams complex, which will eventually become two more coach pitch fields, and one more 60' diamond.
#### 1995
In the Spring the entrance to Field of Dreams was paved. For the third time the water feed had to be re-done. The retaining tank and water lines were installed at the Concession Stand. Beginning this year Kathy Siravo, Janet Wham, and Marcia Weller organized the concession stand management. Rob Pezotti planted a dozen pine trees along Howellville Road and thirteen Japanese maple trees were planted next to the main road into the complex.
Professional planning assistance by Dave Fiorello, Barry Walsh, and Phil Hooper in developing the survey plans and engineering reports allowed the League to submit the results to Tredyffrin Township by June 15 for Phase II. Once approved this allowed for the construction of the two coach pitch fields to proceed.
That Fall, the grading plans were prepared for the Phase II fields. Tons of fill were delivered in preparation for the beginning of the construction of the fields West of the wetlands. The underground sprinkler system was pressurized on the Phase I fields. Plans were drawn up for the Storage/Announcers Building at Cappelletti Field. Groundbreaking for the playground area and additional landscaping near the First Refuge Church occurred.
#### 1996
During the Spring and Summer the Phase II fields were graded and laid out. The Reform Church's parking lot was repaved. A permit was received for the Cappelletti storage/press box building. The flower bed along the outside of the Concession Stand was planted. The water main was corrected for the last time.
In the Fall, Tom Toscani established the High School Community Service Program. The first major project using the high school kids was seeding and laying sod for the three new fields. The sprinkler system was extended to all three new fields.
#### 1997
This year the Phase II fields were overseeded, and plans were prepared for the Township for the final Phase II layout. The infields were cut out. The fence specifications were prepared and installed for the three fields. The Cappelletti press box was constructed and three sets of bleachers and benches were purchased. An underground drainage system was constructed on Cappelletti Field. The first official game took place June 7th at Haas Field.
That Fall, the "Walk of Dreams" was begun. The league obtained a permit from the Township to use the new fields. Approximately half of the parking lot was leveled and stoned across from Haas Field. In association with the Reform Church, landscaped around the Church. The sprinkler system piping to the Phase II Fields was installed but not connected. Aerated and overseeded all six fields. Began to clear out the Phase III section of weeds and trash.
#### 1998
Began the season with all six fields ready for use. Constructed three new handicap ramps, paved the road and put up traffic signs. Water was connected to the Phase II section. On May 30th, Berwyn Paoli hosted the District 21, 27 and 28 Challenger Day program. Over 120 High School students participated helping 239 players. On June 30th, a 5 Year Anniversary Party was held at the complex celebrating that first Challenger game.
In the Fall completed the leveling of the Phase III field through the efforts of Jim Silvius and Ed Antoian. Extended the driveway and parking lots down to the senior field. The sprinkler system was completed on the Phase II fields. That September, the first Mom's Tournament and BPALL Picnic was held.
#### 1999
That Spring and Summer, continued the "Walk of Dreams" construction. The final stoning of all parking areas was completed. Installed two drainage basins. Reseeded all of the Phase II and III fields. Hosted Challenger Day on May 22nd with 269 players and over 150 high school students participating. The outline of the 90 foot diamond was completed. League President Tom Toscani signed contracts with Coca-Cola for scorebaards at all 60 and 90 foot diamonds. The sprinkler system piping was installed at the 90 foot diamond.
In the Fall, in conjunction with TEYSA, the large storage buildings were purchased and installed. One of the storage buildings was for the sole use of the soccer organization. The 90 foot diamond infield was cut out. Due to the drought that summer, most time went into repairing damage done on the Phase II fields.
#### 2000
In early Spring, the electric for the scoreboard and fencing for the 90 foot diamond was completed. Later that Spring the scoreboard was installed and batting cage erected.
#### 2005
The "lean-to" benches for the players were replaced with dugouts on Toscani, Cappelletti, and Haas fields. The softball diamond, Toscani Field, was skinned and new fencing added to make it suitable for both Little League and ASA tournament play.
#### 2007
Even with strict Little League regulation of bats for safety and consistency, technology became more and more impossible to ignore. As a result, we moved the fences back on the 90 foot diamond to maintain the quality of play for Senior League, American Legion, and other high-school-age leagues. The old Coach Pitch Field #6 was skinned and received a new batting cage and fencing.
#### 2008
This year, we will move the fences back on Cappelletti Field, including a padded wall and 12 foot fence in right field. We will replace the scoreboard and add a second concession stand to serve the upper fields. Another practice batting cage will be added between Cappelletti Field and Toscani Field.

## Introduction
This is intended to be a quick reference to Markdown syntax that will be most common within bpall.org. It is not a complete reference. It will provide some syntax shortcuts without identifying them as such. It will also leave out alternatives when the syntax provided will do nicely. If you want to understand the complete syntax, please refer to John Gruber's [Markdown Syntax Documentation] [1].

## Headings
A heading is created by typing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 # (hash or pound) signs followed by a space and then the heading text. One # sign creates a large heading. Six # signs (i.e., ######) creates a very small heading. In bpall.org, heading 1 is reserved for the page heading. In content, it will be more common for you to use headings 2, 3 and 4.
## Paragraphs
A paragraph is created by surrounding text, above and below, with a blank line. The content in bpall.org will have lots of these.
## Emphasis
Emphasis (usually *italics* or **bold** or ***both***) is created by surrounding the word or words with \* or \*\* or \*\*\*. Note that the asterisk(s) must touch the words they surround; no spaces.
The word \*\*emphasis\*\* here will get the second level of, well, emphasis when the content is rendered as HTML.
## Blockquotes
A blockquote (a block of indented text typically used for quotations) is created by starting the first line of a paragraph with `>` (the greater than sign). It's not certain this will be used much in bpall.org.
## Horizontal Rule
A horizontal rule is created by typing three asterisks (i.e., \*\*\*) on a line by themselves.
## Ordered Lists (Number Lists)
An ordered list is created by placing a number followed by a period at the beginning of each line within the list. The first entry should be `1.`. After that it doesn't matter as long as it is a number. Like a paragraph, there must be a blank line above and below the list. The following will be an ordered list when rendered as HTML:
1\. first item ++
1\. second item ++
1\. third item
And here it is rendered:

## Unordered Lists (Bullet Lists)
An unordered list is created by placing a dash (minus sign) at the beginning of each line within the list. Like a paragraph, there must be a blank line above and below the list. The following will be an unordered list when rendered as HTML:

## Links
A link is created in two steps. The first step is to insert the link text and a reference id at the position desired within your content. The second step is to add the remainder of the link information at the bottom of the Markdown entry. Here's an example:

## Automatic Links

## Images
Like a normal link, an image is created in two steps. The first step is to insert the image alt text and a reference id at the position desired within your content. The second step is to add the remainder of the image information at the bottom of Markdown entry. Here's an example:

> ... (more content until we reach the bottom of this entry) ...

## Backslash Escapes
You may find yourself needing to use a Markdown special character (e.g., #) as just that character without its Markdown specialness. In most cases you can place a backslash in front of it and everything will be fine. So, it's \\\*NEW\\\* to see real asterisks. Not \*NEW\*.
## Limitations
There is a current limitation in xtivus that prevents you from taking advantage of the complete Markdown syntax. Text created in xtivus is currently "scrubbed" of extra whitespace (spaces, tabs and the like). This was done so that plain text content resembles in xtivus how it will eventually appear in a web page. Unfortunately, Markdown sometimes relies on that extra whitespace.
To create a code block using Markdown, you begin lines with at least four spaces. They get wiped away by xtivus. The workaround is not too bad. Simply start each line with `++++` (four plus signs) instead of the four spaces. Note that this also applies to multi-level/multi-paragraph lists.
To create a new line within the same paragraph using Markdown, you end the line with two spaces and hit Enter to begin a new line. The extra spaces are deleted by xtivus. Again, the workaround is not too bad. Simply end the line with `++` (two plus signs) instead of the two spaces.

## Sandbox Usage Guidelines
This sandbox was created to demonstrate common Markdown syntax. It can also be used to test your content changes before taking them ***live***. While the "View" link within the detail tab of xtivus is handy for seeing your Markdown content as rendered in HTML, it cannot show you exactly what your content will look like within bpall.org. Why? Because the "View" link yields unstyled HTML whereas bpall.org is highly styled.
You can experiment using the sandbox. Simply add new entries within the Markdown Sandbox list. Click the "View" link in the xtivus detail tab for a quick look or click the Markdown Sandbox link (under Markdown Links) in the xtivus left nav to see the results in bpall.org.
If you are adding or replacing a large amount of content in bpall.org consider taking the following steps:
1. create a new Markdown List under Virtual Pages, ***or***
2. copy an existing Markdown List and paste it under Virtual Pages
3. give the Markdown List a *unique* name ending in `.aspx`
4. the name should be all lower case, hyphenated, no spaces
5. to quickly see your changes, click the "View" link within xtivus

Using xtivus and Markdown, you can now add complete pages to bpall.org! Just follow a few simple rules and your virtual pages will display on the website just like complete physical pages.
## The Rules
Okay, here are the rules.
#### Naming
- create a Markdown List within "Virtual Pages"
- give the list a *unique* name ending in `.aspx`
- it must be unique within the bpall public xsite
- the name should be all lower case, no spaces
- if it is a multi-word name, use hyphens (dashes)
#### First Item
- the first item must contain a **Heading 1** name

So, if you create a Markdown List named `my-excellent-virtual-page.aspx`, the link is:

Don't forget the "/mc/" within the link URL. It won't work without it.

Virtual pages will have the same look as other BPALL pages. The headings, left nav, footer and styling will be identical. We will probably end up with many virtual pages. In fact, several previously physical pages have now been converted to virtual pages.

##General Information
Summer Baseball registration for Berwyn Paoli Area Little League is now open. This league is open to 8 (current CP8 players), 9 and 10-year-olds who have just finished playing Spring baseball. Games will be played on Monday - Thursday evenings at 6PM; each team will play at least 2 games/week. If there are sufficient registrations, we will separate the teams by age (an 8YO division and a 9-10YO division).
Summer Ball is a great way for the baseball player to stay active in the sport during the offseason. It is informal and always fun – bring your dinner in a picnic basket to the field and enjoy the summer evenings watching Little League baseball. Our Summer Ball program is very popular and has been very successful in the past few years. In particular, this is a great mechanism to prepare the current 8-year-olds for their season in the 9YO division in the Fall and Spring where they will be allowed to pitch and will face other kids.
Games will begin on June 25, and end the season will end on July 30. Once teams are formed, managers will contact you with the schedules.

## Fall Softball
Starting in September, there will be fall softball for minors, majors, and juniors/seniors. Girls will play in whatever division they would play next spring to get a taste of what it will be like.
Fall ball is a great opportunity to play some extra softball in a relaxed environment. We play against other local little leagues and the weather is usually perfect for softball.
There are no practices. Games are played on Sundays (with a few Saturdays possible). Many girls play both soccer and fall ball with few conflicts.

Parents - here's a chance for your son or daughter to be an Umpire…..and Earn some Money!!!
Our annual Student Umpire Clinic will be held on **Saturday, February 27, from 9am – noon** at the Valley Forge Middle School Audion. This is a great chance for children 13 years old and older to learn how to be an umpire. Once the student receives this training, they are eligible to umpire games in the Minors Division for baseball and softball. In addition to the classroom training, each new umpire observes a Majors game with the student umpire director to really see how the game looks from the view of the umpire. It is a great way for kids to learn more about the game and earn $25 per game at the same time (and maybe gain a little more respect for the role of the umpire in our games!).
Our Student Umpire Program is one of the most important programs in our league. It teaches our young people responsibility, leadership and teamwork. It has been in place for years and many of the other leagues in the district ask us how we built and manage it.

##Scheduling and Procedures##
Each week, Student Umpire will email the scheduler the days and times that he/she is available that week to umpire. The scheduler will appoint Student Umpires for each Minor Baseball or Softball game each week. Depending on the number of Student Umpires who are available to work each week, a Student Umpire can expect to umpire between 1 to 3 games per week. Minor baseball games are typically 2 to 2.5 hours and minor Softball games usually run 1.5 to 2 hours. **NOTE:** All first time Student Umpires must attend a Majors Baseball or Softball game with an experienced umpire and discuss that game with the umpire, Mr. Buck Buchanan, and discuss that game with Mr. Buchanan before the Student Umpire can umpire a game.
##Umpire Equipment
Umpire equipment will be available for Student Umpires to borrow while working BPALL games.
##Umpire Uniforms
Student Umpires need to supply and wear a black polo or tee shirt (short or long sleeves) and black pants or shorts. NOTE: Student Umpires must have no writing or designs on their shirts or pants. SOLID BLACK for one's uniform will be mandatory this year. Students not wearing solid black will be ineligible to umpire.

#Softball Tournament Season
Tournament play takes place after the regular season ends and is a terrific way to improve players' skills and build friendships over the summer. Player selection based on regular season play, majors/minors managers/coaches input, prior tournament performance, and tryouts.
If there is enough interest, a 10/11 team may be formed. So yes, your player may be eligible for more than one team. However, Little League rules are that a player may only play on one tournament team.
Important Note: forget about your player's actual age; all that matters for tournament play is the year she was born.
- 9/10's Team (Born 2001 & 2002) Tryouts Saturday, June 2, 6:30pm at D'Ambrosia
- 11/12's Team (Born 1999 & 2000) - Tryouts Sunday, June 3, 2pm at D'Ambrosia
Players selected for a team should be prepared for and are expected to attend about 4 practices per week for two weeks and then play 3-7 tournament games. It is like a mini-softball camp.

##General Information
Players will be selected for tournament teams based upon regular season play, manager/coach input, tryout, prior tournament performance. Consideration will also be given to player availability during practice and tournament time period. Team rosters will be announced on June 15th or two weeks prior to the first Little League district game. "A" and "B" teams will be formed; if enough interest, "C" teams will be formed.
Practices will begin no earlier than June 15th. Location and times TBD. Assume practice on most days; time and location TBD.
Each family must volunteer (i.e. - concession stand duty, field maintenance, etc.) during a BPALL tournament game or other hosted tournament games (not during your son's games).
##Tryout Information
**Players should wear their 2014 regular season team jersey, NOT PRIOR TOURNAMENT UNIFORM.** All parents please plan to attend a brief informational meeting at the field prior to your player's tryout. ## Toscani Receives "Great Friend to Kids Award"

In a ceremony in November 2009 at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, Tom Toscani was presented with the 14th annual "Great Friends to Kids Award" by the [***Please Touch Museum***][2]. There is a reason that the first diamond at BPALL's Field of Dreams Complex was named Toscani Field. Toscani has worked tirelessly on behalf of our organization for the last two decades. From finance to design and hard labor to management, Tom's commitment is seen throughout the organization and appreciated by all. BPALL is only one of Tom's passions and it is that pervasive presence throughout our community that has earned Tom, along with the Phillie Phanatic and five other recipients, the Please Touch Museum's 14th annual Great Friend to Kids Award. It honors individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to enriching the lives of children. By recognizing those who are dedicated to helping children, Please Touch hopes to inspire others to do the same.

Our league was recognized, during the Little League District 27 banquet on September 10th, for several achievements: **Gwenn Mascioli** as BPALL's Mom of The Year; **Ramesh Raghupathi** as BPALL's Volunteer of The Year; BPALL itself for hosting more tournament games in 2010 than any other league; **Don Martin** for his excellent work in hosting games; and **Dave Phelan** as the District's Volunteer of The Year. All of our volunteers do a lot with BPALL, but it was great to have the above individuals recognized for their efforts on behalf of the players. Dave's recognition by the District for all of his work in scheduling and rescheduling District level games (including Fall Ball) is very well deserved. He puts a lot of time in behind the scenes for the District, and it was nice to see those efforts lauded. Congratulations to all of the BPALL honorees!

In the spring, BPALL coordinated a charity drive with [***Penn Liberty Bank***] [2] in which equipment donated by families and BPALL supporters went to startup inner city Philadelphia Little League team, the [**Francisville A's and Camp HOPE for Kids**] [1].
The Francisville A's, a team supported by BPALL, wound up their season as champions of the Heritage Baseball League.

##BPALL Softball Team Wins District 27 Title
The 11/12 International Softball Tournament Team defeated Exton 5-2 in the district finals. The team went 4-0 in the Tournament, outscoring its opponents by a combined 33-6. Sectional play starts on Tuesday, July 13. The team is managed by Andy Youman and coached by Scott Mascioli, Kerry Kostenbauder, and Chuck Rueger. Congratulations!

##Berwyn Paoli’s Princeton Tigers are Little League Softball Champs
In their third and final meeting of the 2011 Major’s softball season, the Princeton Tigers handed the Cornell Big Red their second loss, defeating them 17 – 11 at the Berwyn Paoli Little League’s Field of Dreams to capture the Majors Girls League Championship trophy.
The Tigers jumped on the Big Red early with 10 hits & scoring 10 runs to lead 10 – 3 at the end of two innings. The Big Red made it interesting by scoring 5 runs of their own in the 3rd making it 10 – 8 at the end of three. In the end, the Tigers offence and smothering defense which allowed only three runs in the final innings of the game, proved to be just too much for Cornell.
The Tiger’s pitching duo of Presina Mottley and Olivia Rueger recorded 8 strikeouts in the victory, giving up only 8 hits and 5 walks in the game. Emma Koelle, Katie Rycyzyn and Lizzy Jones were a big part of the Tigers offensive onslaught with 8 of the Tigers 17 hits. One of the many highlights in the game came in the 5th inning when Olivia Cepelik smacked a lead off triple down the left field line eventually scoring two batters later by stealing home.
The victory capped a successful 11 – 1 – 3 season for the Tigers who got important contributions in the field and at the plate from star players Lauren Cauley, Hannah Leon, Madeleine Bove, and Nina Mirzai. Manager Chuck Rueger complimented his team after the game, “I am really proud of how hard our team worked, supporting one another all season, and showing how playing as team really pays off!”

##Softball Majors All-Star Recap
The 2011 Berwyn Paoli Little League All Star game was an action packed contest, featuring 11 and 12 year old softballers. After two innings, the Western Ivies pulled to an early 2-0 lead with Bridget "Flash" Whitlow and Stephanie "Smash & Run" Hamilton manufacturing walks into runs against the no-hit Eastern Ivies battery of Presina "Super Fast" Mottley and Lizzy "Dancing Queen" Jones. The game pulled to even after 5 innings to 8-8 after a scoring flurry in the middle innings. A defensive highlight was Katie "Super Windmill" Mayock gunning down a Yale Eli attempting to steal second base. In the last inning, the balanced hitting by the Western Ivies prevailed. Winning pitchers were split between Caleigh "Lights Out" Sturgeon and Katie "Super Windmill" Mayock. And credited with the closing save was Bridget "Flash" Whitlow.
As always, fine concession stand cuisine was provided by Grill Master, Tom Toscani.

On August 2, 2011, BPALL's 8A tournament team won the Sacred Heart CYO Summer Slugfest in Hainesport, New Jersey, defeating Moorestown Little League by a 10-6 score. Highlights of the championship game included stellar pitching from John Foster, Joey Allen, and Kevin Walton, who secured victory by striking out the final Moorestown batter. Defensively, Max Giles made several spectacular plays at second base and Ryan Bill executed a flawless tag at homeplate. Offensively, Kyle Gartner and Jack Fialko contributed multiple hits and RBIs, plating Zach Kohm, Justin
Schopf, and Patrick Nichols.
BP went undefeated in the tournament, leading all teams by averaging nearly twelve runs per game. Congratulations boys!

Berwyn-Paoli defeated Upper Providence, 5-4, in the District 27 tournament (10-11 year old division) at Pottstown Little League field July 15.
It was Upper Providence's first loss in two years in the District 27 tournament. Luke Borger led Berwyn-Paoli with two doubles and two RBIs.
B-P quickly took the lead with a run in the first inning. They were able to hold Upper Providence's scoreless in the first two frames, with catcher Luke Czepiel and pitcher Sean Bacskai teaming up to tag out Pete Agler in the first and Vince Viney in the second, each attempting to steal home, and Czepiel throwing to shortstop Peyton Jones to pick off the runner at second.
With the game tied going into the top of the sixth, pitcher Will Youman got on base with a double to center and ended up scoring on a passed ball. In the bottom of the sixth, Upper Providence put their first two men on base with a hit and a walk. Ethan Krohn struck out the third batter, then Jones put away the next two batters, with the last out a hard ground ball up the middle that Jones snagged and successfully threw to Borger at first.
Andrew Gluck, Luke Borger, Will Youman, Peyton Jones, Owen Margois, Luke Czepiel , Jared DeLuccia, and Ethan Krohn all collected hits for B-P. The win forced a second match-up July 16 at Pottstown Little League field to determine the District 27 champion.
In the District 27 final, B-P lost to Upper Providence, 11-1, stopped by Jake Kelchner's pitching. With an overpowering fastball and a tricky curve ball, Kelchner pitched 4 2/3 innings and held the B-P bats to just six hits. B-P's Sean Bacskai scored the team's only run in the bottom of the first. After getting on base with a single to center field, Bacskai stole second, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
To get to the finals, Berwyn-Paoli had to win five games in five days.

In an exciting contest of 10 year olds on a brisk Sunday afternoon, the Visiting and Home All-Star teams ended up with a 12-12 tied game.
The Visitor All-Stars were led by RJ Mita, who tied the score in the top of the last inning with a two-run double, and Spencer Rosato, who pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning to preserve the tie. The Visitors offense had many stars. Dominic Sanchirico blasted a three-run double to center. Corey Kovalovich knocked in three with a line-drive single to right and a bases-loaded walk. Nate Motel slugged a two run double to left centerfield and collected a run on a walk. Mitchell Lamb had a run scoring single. Rosato, Ben Axel, Malcolm Roeder and Andrew Kese all had base hits and scored for the Visitors. Charlie Baker and Harrison Gillis each scored twice following walks. Also scoring a run each after taking bases on balls were Will Pless, Blake Buthusiem, and Kyle Kennedy. Arjun Rao, Axel and Kese pitched well for the Visitors. Brian McHugh was stellar on defense.
Everyone contributed to the potent Home All-Star’s offense. The Home All Stars were powered by Shane Scott’s three-run triple and a two-run base hit by James Falcone. Elliott Calloway popped a single, knocked in a run and scored a run. Matt Dempsey singled and scored a run. Ethan Shew knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice and scored a run. Connor Wilchusky walked and scored twice. Also scoring runs for the Home All Stars were Hayden Lewis, Joseph Czepiel, Grace Lanouette, Kevin Tao, Nick Maier, and Connor Fisher. Myles Scott, Josh Gifford, Jacob Robinson, and Ian Charles plated runs on bases-loaded walks. Patrick Griswold knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice. Luke Wolter, Lanouette, Czepiel and Calloway pitched well.

##Sunday, March 11th Workday at Field of Dreams
All volunteers are strongly encouraged to join us this Sunday, March 11th for a full day of getting the fields ready for play and clinics on safety, field prep,and coaching. The Safety Training at 1:00 pm and Field Maintenance/Prep at 1:30pm are being held to offer guidance to our volunteers to help provide a safe environment for our players and access to well-presented fields. The 2:00pm Coaches Clinic is conducted by a former professional player and will focus on training our coaches on how to teach the game to our Little League players.
**All workday volunteers will be fed!**
Workday Schedule:
- 8:30am - Workday begins at Concession Stand (Toscani Field)
- 1:00pm - Safety Training (Haas Field)
- 1:30pm - Field Maintenance and Prep Training (Haas Field)

##Little League Information - Illegal Bats
The Little League organization has comprehensive regulations governing the types of bats allowed for use in games, and actions to be taken when a player uses an illegal bat. Please note the following:
Rule 6.06 – Baseball - The batter is out for illegal action when –
(d) The batter enters the batter’s box with an illegal bat (see bat specifications Rule 1.10) or is discovered having used an illegal bat.
Note: If the infraction is discovered before the next pitch following the turn at bat of the player who used an illegal bat -
The manager of the defense may advise the plate umpire of a decision to decline the penalty and accept the play. Such election shall be made immediately at the end of the play.
For the first violation, the offensive team will lose one eligible adult base coach for the duration of the game.
For the second violation, the manager of the team will be ejected from the game. Any subsequent violation will result in the newly designated manager being ejected.

Recent tragedies that involved young athletes in Michigan and Colorado highlight the need to have AEDs accessible at sporting events and to have volunteers trained in CPR / AED use. BPALL has partnered with [***CardioReady***][1] to institute a comprehensive safety program, which includes the installation of AEDs at the Field of Dreams and training of BPALL volunteers.

##Local Scouts Rebuild Access Ramps
In early April, more than 40 Boy Scouts, parents, and friends of Boy Scout Troop Devon 50 completed a demolition and rebuilding of the decks for three handicap access ramps at BPALL's Field of Dreams complex. The group was led by Alex Wilson, a sophomore at Conestoga High School, who planned and implemented the project as a part of the requirements to achieve his Eagle Scout rank. The ramps were reconstructed over two days with a combined total of over 225 man hours contributed by the volunteers. These ramps were originally constructed by BPALL to allow children with disabilities easier access to the fields for their participation in the Challenger League.

##BP1 Wins John Klein District 27 Champs

The Berwyn Paoli Area Little League John Klein Team 1 won the John Klein championship on July 28, 2012. BPALL has won the John Klein championship five times in the last ten years. The 2012 team of 12-year-old boys went undefeated in the tournament and faced stiff competition from a talented Great Valley 1 team in the championship game. The game, played at Chester Valley Little League’s Monument Ave field was nail-biter going into extra innings, with BP1 winning in the bottom of the 7th inning with a walk-off single by Ryan Gabriel. Highlights of the game included a solid 5-inning outing by pitcher Tucker Conlan and home runs by Nick Jennings and Charlie Schappell to tie the scores in the 3rd and 6th innings respectively. The championship represents the culmination of hard work and efforts of the 14 boys who practiced and played hard for six weeks sometimes in 100-degree heat. Congratulations!!

Moms shined on Saturday, June 2nd, during the league's first ever Moms' Batting Derby. Bats were swinging, The Grill was hot, and crowds were cheering for all the Moms in the Derby. Linda Lofland and Linda Beaulieu of "Team Double L's" took home first place trophies in the form of IPads. "The Clean Up Crew", featuring Susan Margolis and Kim Buck placed second. Congratulations to all Moms who participated, and many thanks to the volunteers and supporters of this fun-filled family event.

##Scout Eagle Project Transforms Walkway
Over two weekends during November, Ryan Johnson, a junior at Conestoga High School, planned and built a new, handicapped-accessible, flagstone walkway connecting baseball fields 2 and 3. With the help of over 40 fellow scouts and parents from Troop Devon 50 and BPALL volunteers, Tom Toscani and Art DeSolis, Ryan was able to build the 120 ft walkway consisting of over 20 tons of gravel foundation, 165 flagstone slabs, and lined with 64 railroad ties. Art DeSolis donated his backhoe; a gas powered tamper and the time of his team to dig the foundation of the path and supplied 20 tons of gravel which served as the foundation. In addition, Lowes offered a 50% discount off all products purchased to help sponsor the cost of the project. Through 241 total man hours of service the scouts and parents of Devon 50 were able to accomplish their goal of constructing the new flagstone walkway. ## Fall Ball Registration Now Open
Fall Ball registration for Berwyn Paoli Area Little League is now open. Fall Ball is a great way for a baseball or softball player to stay active in the sport during the offseason. It is fairly informal and always fun. Our Fall Ball program is very popular and has been very successful in the past few years. We play against teams from other local Little Leagues.
Many of the boys and girls play Fall Ball in addition to soccer. There are few practices, if any, and games are mostly on Sundays (with an occasional Saturday game). For those players moving up a division next spring season, it is a great, low-key opportunity to get some experience at the new level of play. For everyone else, it is a good way to sharpen your skills and get some bonus baseball/softball in while the weather remains nice.
In Softball, we generally field teams in Minors (3rd and 4th grades), Majors (5th, 6th and some 7th graders) and 13+ (7th, 8th, 9th and some 10th graders); grades represent their grades as of Fall 2015.
In Baseball, we field teams of 9-year-olds, 10-year-olds, 11- and 12-year olds, 13-14-year-olds (Juniors) and 15-16-year-olds (Seniors) according to the following dates of birth:

##General Information
Little League International has changed the age cutoffs for the various divisions in Teeball and Baseball AGAIN (softball remains the same). Starting in 2016, players become age eligible for a particular division on September 1, i.e., if your son or daughter will turn 9 on or before September 1, 2016, they will play Baseball in the 9-year-old division in the Spring. ##New Player Registration
New to the area? New to the league? Please come to our open registrations on the following dates:
- January 9th, 2016 at the T/E Middle School Library. 10am-2pm
- January 16th, 2016 at the T/E Middle School Library. 10am-2pm
We will need proof of age and residence for each child playing in the league for the first time. The open registrations are also a good opportunity to meet league volunteers and to discuss any questions or concerns.

#New Little League Age Requirements (Baseball Only)
Little League International made a change to the age requirements for the baseball division (softball is not affected) which has caused some confusion. In summary, the age determination date for Little League was changed from April 30 to December 31. Although formally effective for the 2018 season, Little League implemented a three year phase in plan to ensure that no child would lose out on a year in the Majors division.
The effect of the change is that children with a birthdate after January 1, 2006 could be affected by the change. Children with a birthdate of December 31, 2005 or prior are not affected by the change.
More specifically, as a result of the implementation strategy, effective immediately, any player born on or after January 1, 2006 who will turn the ages of 5-9 during the 2015 calendar year will be eligible to participate in BPALL and will use the new age determination date of December 31 for the reminder of their Little League Baseball career.
As a result of the changes to the age determination and its impact on our younger players, we have also made an adjustment to our baseball divisions. We have reduced the Coach Pitch division to only one year (CP7) and added a modified “kid pitch” division for the 8 year old players. Our divisions are summarized below.
- Teeball: 5-6 year olds
- Coach Pitch: 7 year olds
- Minors (modified): 8 year olds – this will be an 8YO league only with a modified format in which a coach will take over pitching at 3 balls
- Minors: 9,10,11 year olds
- Majors: 10,11,12 year olds
- Juniors: 13-14 year olds
- Seniors: 15-16 year olds
- Big League: 17-18 year olds
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PLAYERS BORN FROM MAY 1, 2006 – DEC. 31, 2006: As a final and important note, it is possible that your son could move from CP7 to the Minors division. If anyone is uncomfortable with this change, you can request that we move them down a level (eg., from Minors to the Modified 8YO minors) in order to ease the transition. Note, if you decide to move your son down a level for a “transition” year, you will have the choice to move them back “up” next season.
